Biography
Anne Thomas Hines, a Richmond native, has been a lover of all things beautiful since childhood. It was impressed upon her in her earliest years that design had a plan and a purpose…and that all pieces of any design should come together to create wholeness and unity.
Influenced by great designers of the past, such as Nancy Lancaster (Lady Astor), Anne lays the foundation of her work in the classic style of English and European design and architecture. Her travels across the continent, as well as through the Middle and Far East have been continual inspiration for her work, which ranges from residential to commercial.
Anne and her husband, Bob, owned and operated Richmond’s premier antiques store, Thomas-Hines, Inc., from 1972 until 2014. Thomas-Hines, Inc.continues as a full-service interior design firm and works with a wide range of clientele. Anne has enjoyed working with clients from their “first homes” through their “retirement homes” and is especially delighted to see the joy on their faces when they realize so much of what they already have can be beautifully used elsewhere. Another favorite part of her work is guiding young clients who are putting together their first homes and who want to make sure their decorating investments are solid ones that won’t go out of fashion in a few years and lose value (need to be replaced).
“Fashion fades, style is eternal.”
The great quote from Yves Saint Laurent could easily be applied to an Anne Hines design. Anne believes in elegance, beauty, and style. She knows that trends come and go, but that beautiful style is forever. Her clients’ homes reflect just that.
Anne has served as a consultant to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on fabrics and textiles and has also served on the boards of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and its Endowment Fund, Virginia Supportive Housing, the Peter Paul Development Center, Feed More, and the Challenge Discovery Project. She has a heart for the underserved of the East End of her beloved hometown and is thrilled at the great strides that have been made there over the past several years. It, too, is an example of all the pieces coming together to make a whole.
